The Evolution of the Oscar Category
"And the Oscar goes to......."
Since the begining  the Academy Award  has had a major impact and influence over the film industry,  due to the awards unprecedented
influence on a nomination or award that is won by an actor or film. This influence creates prestige and bottom-line profits to a studio or artist.

As a result of its influence on the film industry the Academy Award has had to evolve since the awards began eighty-three years ago.  As the
industry and technology changed and continues to change so does the Oscar category.  Perhaps one day there will be a "Best CGI Actor"
category.

In the first year of the awards, the Best Director Oscar was divided into two separate categories (Drama and Comedy). At times, the Best
Original Score award has also been divided into separate categories (Drama and Comedy/Musical). From the 1930s through the 1960s, the Art
Direction, Cinematography, and Costume Design awards were likewise split into two separate categories (black-and-white films and color films).

Another award, entitled the Academy Award for Best Original Musical, is still in the Academy rulebooks and has yet to be retired. However, due
to continuous insufficient eligibility each year, it has not been awarded since 1984 (when Purple Rain won).
